How Silicone compares with the other 6 materials
| Material | Service temperature | Oil & grease | Weather / UV | Water | Best for | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neoprene | Temperature: from −40°F | Oil & grease: — | Weather / UV: — | Water: — | Best for: General purpose sealing, HVAC systems, marine hardware, plumbing | Avoid: Strong oxidizing acids, ketones, esters |
| EPDM | Temperature: — | Oil & grease: Poor | Weather / UV: Excellent | Water: Excellent | Best for: Outdoor and UV-exposed hardware, roofing, potable water systems, steam lines | Avoid: Petroleum oils, fuels, hydrocarbon solvents |
| Nitrile (Buna-N) | Temperature: — | Oil & grease: Excellent | Weather / UV: Poor | Water: Good | Best for: Automotive fuel systems, hydraulic equipment, oil and gas fittings | Avoid: Outdoor and UV-exposed use, ozone |
| Silicone | Temperature: — | Oil & grease: Poor | Weather / UV: Excellent | Water: Good | Best for: Food processing, high-temp appliances, medical equipment, electronics | Avoid: Petroleum oils, concentrated acids |
| Natural Rubber | Temperature: up to 180°F | Oil & grease: Poor | Weather / UV: Poor | Water: Good | Best for: High-abrasion applications, low-cost general sealing, vibration dampening | Avoid: Outdoor use, oil contact, ozone |
| Viton (FKM) | Temperature: −15°F to 400°F | Oil & grease: Excellent | Weather / UV: Excellent | Water: Good | Best for: Chemical processing, aerospace fuel systems, aggressive solvents | Avoid: Ketones, amines, low-molecular-weight esters |
| Fiber | Temperature: from −40°F | Oil & grease: Good | Weather / UV: Good | Water: — | Best for: Pipe flanges, compression fittings, plumbing gaskets, electrical insulation | Avoid: High-pressure steam, strong acids or alkalis |

Silicone washer properties
| Property | Rating |
|---|---|
| Temperature range | −85°F to 400°F — widest of any washer rubber |
| Food contact | FDA-compliant grades (CFR 177.2600) |
| UV / ozone resistance | Excellent |
| Electrical insulation | Excellent |
| Oil & fuel resistance | Poor — use nitrile or Viton |
| Tear resistance | Lower than other rubbers — protect from sharp edges |
| Typical hardness | 50–60 Shore A, stays soft across its range (durometer guide) |
When a silicone washer is the right call
Pick a silicone washer when temperature or purity rules the application: espresso machines and coffee equipment, ovens, dishwashers and steam appliances, heat lamps and lighting, sub-zero freezer hardware, medical devices, and food and beverage equipment where FDA compliance matters. Silicone also stays flexible at −85°F where every other rubber has gone rigid. Its trade-offs: it's softer and tears more easily than nitrile or EPDM, and petroleum oils degrade it — for hot oily service, Viton is the answer.
Silicone washer FAQ
Are silicone washers food safe?
FDA-compliant silicone grades are the standard for food-contact washers. If your application requires certified food-grade material, contact us to confirm grade documentation before ordering.
What temperature can silicone washers handle?
Continuous service from −85°F to 400°F — the widest range of any common washer material, and why silicone owns appliance and high-heat duty.
Silicone vs rubber washers — what's the difference?
Silicone is a rubber; the comparison people mean is silicone vs organic rubbers like EPDM or neoprene. Silicone wins on temperature extremes and food compliance; EPDM and neoprene are tougher and cheaper for ordinary water and weather duty.
Can I use silicone washers outdoors?
Yes — UV and ozone resistance are excellent. Just keep them away from oils and protect them from abrasion.
