Viton (FKM) is the premium fluoroelastomer washer material built for the harshest chemical and high-temperature environments. When ordinary rubber swells, hardens or dissolves, Viton keeps sealing.
Viton at a glance
- Temperature range: about -15°F to 400°F
- Resists: fuels, oils, solvents, many acids and high heat
- Weak against: low-temperature flexibility and certain ketones and esters
- Cost: premium — specify it where the chemistry demands it
Where Viton is worth it
Fuel systems, chemical processing, automotive and aerospace sealing, and anywhere a washer faces aggressive media at high temperature. Viton often outlasts every alternative in these settings, which can make the higher price the cheaper choice over the life of the part.
When to choose something else
For outdoor water and weather, EPDM is more economical. For extreme cold or food contact, silicone is better. See the full material comparison, then shop Viton washers by size.
