Bolted machinery, appliances and electronics all transmit vibration and noise through their fasteners. A rubber washer in the right material and thickness is one of the cheapest, most effective fixes.
How rubber damps vibration
Rubber absorbs and dissipates vibrational energy instead of letting it pass through the joint as noise and wear. Thicker, softer washers absorb more — which is why damping washers are usually 1/4" or thicker.
Best materials for damping
- Natural rubber: outstanding elasticity and rebound for pure vibration isolation
- Neoprene: excellent all-round damping with added weather and oil tolerance
Sizing for damping
Choose a larger OD to spread the load and a thicker cross-section (1/4" to 1/2") for more isolation. Our size guide explains how thickness affects compression, and the natural rubber guide covers the best damping compound.
Common uses include HVAC units, washing machines, compressors, automotive panels and PC fans. Browse thicker rubber washers by size to quiet yours down.
