Cars, trucks and motorcycles are full of rubber washers — sealing fluids, cushioning panels and quieting rattles. The trick is matching the compound to heat and oil exposure.
Common automotive uses
- Drain plugs & banjo bolts: sealing oil and fuel connections
- Body & trim: cushioning fasteners and stopping rattles
- Electrical: insulating and sealing grommets and terminals
- Suspension & mounts: absorbing vibration
Best materials under the hood
Anywhere oil, fuel or grease is present, choose nitrile. For high heat near the engine or exhaust, step up to Viton or silicone. For body and trim away from oil, neoprene works well. Avoid natural rubber and EPDM around petroleum.
