When a Viton washer earns its price
Viton (FKM fluoroelastomer) is the premium answer when heat and chemistry stack up: fuel systems running ethanol blends, carburetor and injector hardware, hot oil service, chemical transfer, solvents, and engine-bay fasteners that bake at temperatures nitrile can’t hold. Where nitrile hardens and cracks after seasons of heat cycling, Viton keeps sealing for years — the full head-to-head is in Buna vs Viton. For plain water and weather duty, EPDM does the job at a fraction of the cost; save Viton for where it’s genuinely needed.

Viton washer FAQ
Viton vs nitrile — which do I need?
Nitrile handles ordinary petroleum at ordinary temperatures for less money; Viton takes over for ethanol-blended fuels, aggressive chemicals and sustained heat past 250°F.
Are Viton washers fuel resistant?
Yes — including modern E15/E85 ethanol blends that swell nitrile. That’s why late-model fuel systems spec FKM.
What temperature can Viton washers handle?
Continuous service to 400°F with short excursions higher — the highest rating of any washer rubber we stock.
Is Viton worth the extra cost?
When fuel, chemicals or heat are present, yes — one Viton washer outlasts repeated replacements of cheaper compounds. For plain water and weather, EPDM is the economical pick.
