Rubber Washers for Plumbing: Faucets, Hoses and Fittings

The Rubberwasherwarehouse Team |

More plumbing leaks come down to a worn rubber washer than any other single part. The fix is cheap and fast — if you choose the right washer. Here's how to seal the most common plumbing connections for good.

Common plumbing washer jobs

  • Dripping faucet: the seat washer at the base of the valve stem is usually the culprit. Replace with a matching OD/ID in EPDM or neoprene.
  • Garden hose & spigots: a standard flat hose washer seals the threaded coupling; EPDM handles sun and water best.
  • Showerheads & unions: a compressible washer seals threaded joints without overtightening.
  • Supply lines & fittings: flat washers spread load and seal against the mating face.

Best materials for plumbing

EPDM is the top choice for potable water, hot water and outdoor taps thanks to its weather and steam resistance. Neoprene is a fine general-purpose alternative. Avoid nitrile and natural rubber for sustained water exposure. For dry threaded fuel or gas fittings, a fiber washer is often specified instead.

Getting the size right

Bring the old washer to your calipers and match OD, ID and thickness — our size guide walks through measuring. Then choose your compound using the material guide.
